HOW TO IMPRESS YOUR GUESTS EVERY TIME

Category Property Ownership

The Holiday Season is here! You might not be travelling this year but will have house guests. The first thing that comes to mind is to spring clean the house and wash the windows. But, is a clean house the only important factor? Impressing house guests often comes down to creating a welcoming, stylish, and functional atmosphere that makes them feel comfortable and at home. Here are some key elements that can elevate your home and leave a lasting impression:

First Impressions Matter

  • Landscaping: The pavement and your garden are the first things they notice upon arrival. Ensure the lawn is mowed and have some colourful flowers in a pot at your front door. Does the front door need a fresh coat of paint?
  • Entryway: Ensure your entryway is neat and welcoming. A stylish console table, a statement mirror, or a bold piece of art can set the tone for the rest of the home. Well-placed lighting can elevate the space immediately.
  • Scent: Light a scented candle or diffuse a pleasant fragrance like lavender or citrus. This creates an inviting atmosphere as soon as they walk in.

Smart Lighting

  • Ambient Lighting: Soft, warm lighting helps set a cosy tone. Consider using dimmers, table lamps, or pendant lighting to create a relaxed ambiance. Avoid harsh overhead lights.
  • Accent Lighting: Highlight specific features of your home, like artwork or architectural details, with spotlights or accent lamps. It gives your space a sophisticated feel.

Personalised Touches

  • Art and Decor: Display artwork, family photos, or travel souvenirs that tell a story about your interests and personality. Guests will notice huge, empty walls that are begging for a little artwork.
  • Unique Finds: Incorporate one or two statement pieces, such as an antique piece of furniture, a quirky vase, or a designer object. Guests often appreciate meaningful items that reflect your tastes and spark conversation.
  • Fresh flowers and plants: These always make for a fresh and welcoming atmosphere.

Cleanliness and Organisation

  • Neat Spaces: A well-organized, clutter-free environment always makes a great impression. Take extra care in high-traffic areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and entrance hall.
  • Bathrooms: Make sure the bathrooms are spotless and stocked with essentials (like fresh hand towels, soap, and a subtle air freshener). A few luxurious touches, like a tray with decorative soaps, can elevate the space.
  • Kitchen: Keep the kitchen spotless, wipe countertops, and ensure that the dishes are washed and stored away. Open the windows and let fresh air in - be sure to rid the space of lingering odours.
  • Overflowing Rubbish Bins: Guests notice bins filled to the brim. Empty the bin regularly before odours develop and before it attracts ants and bugs.
  • Pets: You love your furry-feet children, but your guests might not feel the same. Jumping and barking dogs will be an irritation, and so will clumps of pet hair and odours.

Outdoor Appeal

  • Patio or Garden Area: If you have outdoor space, make it inviting with cosy seating, outdoor lighting, and a bonfire. A well-kept garden or balcony with fresh plants adds a pleasant surprise.
  • Outdoor Dining: Even a good old South African braai area can be made special with the addition of candles or string lights for ambiance.

Hosting Skills

  • Welcome to my home: No matter how long you've known them, guests notice hosting skills. Make sure your guests feel comfortable and at home. Offer drinks on arrival and ensure that a non-alcohohic variety and water are available too. Offering personalised food or drink options will make your guests feel special.
  • The right atmosphere: Music can create a pleasant background atmosphere without overwhelming conversations.
  • Seasonal Touches: Festive decorative pieces will add to the holiday spirit and help guests to relax and engage.

Ultimately, creating a warm, stylish, and personalized space, along with thoughtful details, will ensure your home leaves a positive and lasting impression.
