History and Suburbs

Vanderbijlpark is situated on the banks of the Vaal River, and was named after Hendrik van der Bijl,an electrical engineer and industrialist. It’s a home to the well known Global Company ArcelorMittal as well as Cape Gate that is a major shareholder in the wire industry. Vanderbijlpark is divided into four distinct residential blocks namely CE, CW, SW and SE areas and these residential blocks are divided into suburbs and then named  CE1, CE2, CE3, CE4,CW1, CW2, CW3, CW4, CW5, CW6, SW1,SW2, SW5, SE1, SE2, SE3, SE4, SE6, SE7 and SE8. There are also other suburbs like Bonnane, Flora Gardens, Bophelong and Boipatong. There are also a number of small holdings like Vaalview, Theoville, Rusticana, Stephanopark and Mantevrede.   It is a peaceful neighborhood, and also a close community with a population of ±95 840.

There are a few suburbs close to the Vaal River that are wealthy and modern areas. SW5 Proper is one of the most sought after areas with extravagant houses, some of them overlooks the Vaal River.  Properties in this area range from 2million to 8 million Rand. Another favorite part is the area called Marlbank and is referred to as “Millionares bend” with some of the most expensive houses ranging in the 10 to 20 millions. Then there is the popular Golf Estate situated next to the River with beautiful apartments and Residential homes and the Estate offers the upper most security to home owners. The apartment prices range from R750 000 to R1.4 million and the Residential houses in the Golf Estate range from R3 million to R8 million. Most of the houses in Vanderbijlpark were built by Iscor during the 1947-1964 period and 60% of the town’s population live in these homes and is also the most affordable homes, with the prices ranging from R 550 000 to R 950 000.

Schools and Tertiary Education

For the family with children, Vanderbijlpark offers you 20 primary schools and 8 high schools located over the various suburbs. There are also four private schools namely; El Shaddai School, Emmanuel Christian School, Vaal Primary School and Santa Maria Junior School.  As for tertiary education there are the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), a satellite campus of North West University (NWU) and Sedibeng College. There are numerous homes and flats that are rented by the students studying at these institutions. 

Surrounding Amenities

A variety of Shopping centre’s are located in this beautiful town and the heart of Vanderbijlpark is the Vaal Mall that offers you 50 000m2 of convenient shopping with 135 retai,l and fashion stores, food courts with sit down, and take-away restaurants, and cinemas. Recently they upgraded the parking space to a multi level parking garage, and Vaal Mall is also going green after installing solar panels as a main power source.

The Emerald Resort and Casino is one of the main attractions, and less than an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, offering various types of entertainment for the whole family with a bowling alley, animal world, Aquadome, game drives, Emerald spa, kids’ zone and river fishing.  The Restaurants and bars, conferencing venues and wedding packages is some of the extras.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, Stonehaven on Vaal offers you boat cruises and a relaxing atmosphere. On the banks of the river we cater primarily for relaxation with Guest Houses but it is also the convenient place for functions, fishing, camping, team building, and motorboat sport. Riverside Holiday Inn is also situated in Vanderbijlpark. There are also other venues next to the river offering a variety of entertainment, bridal functions and much more.

You are within an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, and the OR Tambo International airport.

Only the best medical care are provided by Medical Doctors ranging from GP’s to Specialists with advance technology and Hospitals in the area are Cormed Clinic and Emfuleni Medi-Clinic situated near the CBD.
